General Information Directions: From Mesa, Arizona, take U.S. There are plenty of hiking and equestrian trails, camping areas, boating and rafting areas, ghost towns and numerous sightseeing opportunities. The 2 hour excursion is well worth every. Fresh water and great cliffs, mountain scenery and only 35 miles from Mesa (but figure at least an hour for this scenic drive) There is a marina to launch your boat or rent motorized boats, canoes or take the Dolly Steamboat tour. There are some OHV trails in this general area, but Apache Trail itself is not really an ATV or motorcycle trail, it is a road. Canyon Lake and the drive there is worth at least a day long visit. The Superstition Wilderness, Four Peaks Wilderness, Three Bar Wildlife Area and portions of the Tonto National Forest surround this loop, making it a very scenic drive. After passing Tortilla Flat (near mile marker 23) the road turns into a well-maintained dirt road that continues for 22 miles toward Roosevelt Dam.
